About the Stone
We often say we deal with three basic stone types: Sedimentary, Metamorphic, and Igneous
Sedimentary Stone is formed when deposits of organic and inorganic materials collect from the effects of glaciers, rivers, winds, plant growth, etc. These are then bonded together by heat and pressure over periods of millions of years. Examples are: Sandstone, Limestone, Soapstone, Fossil Stone, and Travertine.
Metamorphic Stone is formed as a result of changes in mineralogy / texture due to physical or chemical changes in the environment. Examples are: Marble, Slate
Igneous Stone is formed from volcanic material such a magma. An example is: Granite
The reality is that there are thousands of "named" variations of these types.
On top of this, it is also true that there are virtually NO two pieces of stone that are truly alike. They all have variations in color or pattern, even within a type.
For this reason we recommend using one craftsman and one source of stone for each area you are finishing. That way you can be assured you are getting the same quality and same stone from the same source for consistency.
Below are some charts illustrating the bewildering array of patterns and colors for each major stone category. Then contact Design Stone to review physical samples of stone for the most accurate representation in your target environment.
It is this variation that also creates differences in the availability of certain colors and patterns. This consequently affects costs dramatically, so consultation with the experts at Design Stone is necessary to select the optimum materials for your project.
Savor the evaluation during your selection process, and anticipate the long-term satisfaction that a good choice will offer you.
